DJ, Chowder and Jenny force the house to vomit them outside by grabbing its uvula. Mr. Nebbercracker arrived home alive and revealed that the house is possessed by his wife Constance. When he was young, Horace met Constance who was an unwilling member of a circus sideshow and fell in love with her despite her obesity. One Halloween day as children tormented her, Constance tried hurting them with an axe, but lost her footing and fell in the basement of the house also wet cement buried her body. Horace finished the house after Constance's death knowing it was what she would have wanted. Aware that Constance's spirit made the house come alive, Horace tried to keeping people away by pretending to hating them for their safety.

DJ's parents Mr. and Mrs. Walters leave town for the weekend for a dentist convention and leaving him in the care of Zee. DJ's friend Chowder loses his basketball on Mr. Nebbercracker's lawn. After the ambulance leaves, Chowder heads home and DJ's babysitter Elizabeth arrives but DJ is not that excited seeing her even when she tries getting his attention about an smbulamce she saw. Just DJ is gone upstairs, Zee puts a tape cassette in the radio and plays her loud music at full volume, then calls her friends over when she's not supposed to. DJ slams the door to his room and goes to bed when he starts having a nightmare. That night, DJ receives phone calls from Mr. Nebbercracker's house with no one on the other end.

And since this is a movie aimed at an audience for whom the grosser bodily functions are a perpetual source of laughs, it vomits them up again. The house roars, belches, spits fire and in the end turns out to be...Kathleen Turner. On the day before Halloween, 12-year-old Dustin James "D.J." Walters documents his elderly neighbor, Horace Nebbercracker, stealing a little girl's tricycle and scaring her away from his house, one of many similar incidents that have occurred. That same day, D.J.'s parents leave for a convention, placing him in the care of his teenage babysitter Elizabeth, or Zee. Later, D.J.'s friend, Charles "Chowder" Peterson, loses his basketball on Nebbercracker's lawn; D.J. He appears to suffer a heart attack and is presumed dead by the duo as he is taken away in an ambulance.

And for the most part they talk and behave like real kids, too, or at least like characters drawn from the rich tradition of plucky, intellectually curious kiddie-lit heroes. DJ is descended from Encyclopedia Brown (perhaps by way of Jimmy Neutron, but never mind), and Jenny bears some temperamental resemblance to Harriet the Spy. I’m sure Chowder will remind you of someone in your fifth-grade class, wherever or whenever that was. The children, left to their own devices, must conquer the evil that, all but unnoticed, flourishes in their midst.

Swings out on a crane's hook with it, dropping it into the house's chimney and vanquishing Constance.
They fall into the basement and find a collection of toys accumulated from Mr. Nebbercracker's lawn, as well as a cage containing the body of Mr. Nebbercracker's wife encased in cement. Jenny wondered why Mr. Nebbercracker build a shrine if he murdered her. Chowder suggested that he felt guilty or something but DJ, determined to find our the truth knew that Mr. Nebbercracker was hiding something.

Later Bones sees his kite in the doorway (the mouth) of Mr. Nebbercracker's house, but he and the kite are med by the haunted house as he is retrieving it. He found Chowder on the backhoe and tolds him that Mr. Nebbercracker had come back from the dead to get revenge. Later they came to Mr. Nebbercracker's lawn and Chowder rings the doorbell. DJ is given the dynamite and he and Jenny climb to the top of a tower crane while Chowder distracts the horse.
Set in October of 1997, a little girl named Eliza rides her tricycle around the neighborhood, singing along, but she hits the lawn, and it gets stuck. As she tries to get out, she pedals to get it free but it's no use. Just then, Horace Nebbercracker snaps at her and takes the tricycle and removes the wheel to tempt her to go away. A 12-year-old boy DJ Walters spies on his elderly neighbor Mr. Nebbercracker who confiscates any item landing in his yard.
It later roars at DJ and Chowder which caused them to run to DJ's house. It also represents, to the technology nerds in the audience, an interesting refinement of animation techniques. Like Robert Zemeckis’s “Polar Express,” “Monster House” (for which Mr. Zemeckis served as an executive producer) uses the digitally captured movements of real actors rather than computer-generated algorithms as the basis for its animated images. The postures and gestures of DJ (Mitchell Musso) and his pals — a pudgy fellow named Chowder (Sam Lerner) and a preppy redhead named Jenny (Spencer Locke) — have an authentically loose and antic look.
The film features the voices of Mitchel Musso, Sam Lerner, Spencer Locke, Steve Buscemi, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kevin James, Nick Cannon, Jason Lee, Fred Willard, Jon Heder, Catherine O'Hara, and Kathleen Turner. The trio consults supernatural expert Reginald "Skull" Skulinski, who speculates the house must be a rare type of monster created by the fusion of a human's spirit and a man-made object that can only be unbound when its heart is struck. Ascertaining that the presumably-deceased Nebbercracker is the cause, the trio construct a dummy filled with cough syrup Chowder stole from a pharmacy owned by his father. They offer the dummy to the house to eat, hoping to put the house to sleep so they can find its "heart" (its furnace). Landers and Lister then inadvertently foil the plan as the former discovers the stolen medicine; as they attempt to arrest the trio, the house soon eats them all.
